If you have a soft spot in your heart for rainbow robots, then get yourself to Ananda Hair Studio on Broadway Street in downtown Asheville to see the work of Phil Cheney, stat. Even if you’re not always into psychedelic paintings of flowers and snails and puppy dog tails, Cheney’s “arts” (as he is fond of calling them) will change your mind.

Imagine navigating Dragon*Con via the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, or joining Dr. Who on a trip to Burning Man — such is the work of Cheney. The paintings are bright, adventurous, comical and — in spite of the references — 100 percent original. It is art that doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is one of the reasons it’s so likable.

In spite of the lighthearted themes, there are a lot of sophisticated things occurring in Cheney’s paintings regarding color and composition. He is a master at stylizing complicated subject matter like three-eyed monsters, hippie chicks, mechanical ostriches and starry-eyed eggs with legs.

Another striking aspect of the work is its scale — much larger than I had expected, and in the company of Ananda’s stylish decor, the paintings radiate. While the salon invites viewings during shop hours, you may still want to avoid gawkily plodding a course while people are getting their hair done. To do this you have two options: book yourself an appointment with one of Ananda’s capable stylists, or join Cheney for an artist’s reception Saturday.

Local performance painter, graphic designer and all-around groovy guy, Phil Cheney, has paintings hanging at Ananda Hair Studio in downtown Asheville. The opening reception is Saturday, Sept. 17, from 7:30 to 11 p.m.

This is the Burning Man Rites of Passage artwork featuring the Bon Homme de Flambre Bon-Bon (aka the Bun RIng Mayan). I call it the “Rice of Past Ages.” Since We will not be in attendance this Year, Bob 7 and I plan to Burn a Ham in Birmingham, at least remotely so.

the Outrageous Universe Revival

This Year was the Fifteenth Animal OUR Fest. I attended for my Twelfth year in one row. The event is held annually at the Brushwood Folklore Center in Sherman, NY. Brushwood is a Clothing-optional Artist Colony founded by Frank and Darlene Barney many years ago. Maury Rosenberg started his festival there in 1997 as an answer to the Music Industry’s Corporate Festivals and has maintained it ever since as a very small, original Event.

Maury’s Band Hypnotic Clambake is the Annual Headliner and West Virginia’s Stewed Mulligan have attended every year. Also such Favorites as Snake Oil Medicine Show (who I first went to OUR Fest with back in 2000), Mad Tea Party, Baby Gramps, Redheaded Stepchild and the Buddhahood have graced the Stages there and delighted the Small but dedicated Fan base. The OUR Fest has become more and more like a Family Reunion.

There is a plan in place to bring a lot more Art to the OUR Fest in the future and I am trying to help make that a reality. This Year I brought Singer and multi-Instrumentalist Anita Lorraine Kinney along with me and She performed 3 sets of music. Also, my dear friend Robert Seven from Candlertown, NC, came a decorated the Grape Jam Stage and Amy Kemp brought Her Rapture Bus. Our friends Anna and Andy came all the way from Athens, GA for their 7th visit to Brushwood. It was a really fun time. Everyone asked where the Mad Tea Party and Snake Oil Medicine Show were this year, my guess is that They will be back next year.
